About Williamsville, Illinois: Where Railroads Meet the Mother Road
Williamsville, Illinois is a proud Sangamon County community situated along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Affectionately nicknamed "Billtown," the village was platted in 1853 by William Stapp and soon thereafter incorporated in 1894. Its location near the Chicago and Alton Railroad fueled its early growth, cementing its role as both a railroad hub, and later, a Route 66 stop.
Evidence of this dual heritage remains today. The Old Route 66 Station at 120 N. Elm St., a 1930s-era gas station, once served early motorists traveling the highway. Though no longer in operation, its preserved vintage facade is a favorite photo stop for roadtrippers.
Nearby, the Williamsville Depot Museum at 102 S. Elm St. housed original railroad artifacts, showcasing the town's connection to the iron rails that predated the Mother Road; however, the museum is now permanently closed.
Williamsville also offers natural escapes. Just west of town, Williamsville Lake provided a peaceful retreat for fishing, boating and outdoor recreation, complementing the historic charm of the community. Each May, the town proudly participates in the Red Carpet Corridor festivities, welcoming visitors to celebrate Route 66 heritage together.
With its affectionate nickname, proud railroad roots and enduring role on the highway, Williamsville, a.k.a. Billtown, remains a small town where history and hospitality ride side-by-side.
