About Wildwood, Missouri: Dining in Style on Route 66
Wildwood is located in St. Louis County and it is a modern city that has preserved and revitalized its ties to Route 66. Incorporated in 1995, Wildwood encompasses several historic communities, including Pond, a key stop on the highway's original 1926-1932 alignment along Manchester Road (MO-100). At the heart of its Route 66 legacy stands the Big Chief Highway Hotel, an ambitious roadside complex that became one of Missouri's most celebrated stops.
Built in 1928 by William Clay Pierce of the Pierce-Pennant Oil Co., the Big Chief Highway Hotel was a Spanish Mission Revival masterpiece. Its grounds featured 62 cabins and a full-service restaurant, earning national recognition in a 1935 guidebook as one of the state's largest and most elegant cabin courts. Travelers raved about its fine dining and local lore even claims visits from icons like Al Capone and Babe Ruth.
When Route 66 was realigned in 1932, the Big Chief's fortunes shifted. Its cabins later housed wartime workers before falling into disrepair, but the restaurant endured as a beloved community gathering place. Restored in the 1990s and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, it reopened as the Big Chief Roadhouse at 17352 Manchester Rd., serving a modern garden-to-table menu while embracing its Prohibition-era roots with a speakeasy twist.
Today, Wildwood balances history with progress, celebrating its Route 66 heritage through landmarks like Big Chief and regional events such as the annual Route 66 St. Louis Festival. For travelers seeking a taste of the Mother Road's elegance, and a great meal along the way, Wildwood remains a must-see destination where history, hospitality and flavor converge.
