About Valentine, Arizona: A Desert Stop with Heart
Valentine is a small unincorporated community tucked along Route 66 in Mohave County, straddling Crozier Canyon beneath the shadow of the Peacock and Music Mountains. Most of Valentine lies within a secluded pocket of the Hualapai Indian Reservation, with a few parcels extending into unincorporated Mohave County. The settlement was officially established in 1898 when the U.S. government allocated 660 acres for Native American use, laying the foundation for the small town that exists today.
Valentine's claim to fame came from its post office, which was once a destination in its own right. For decades, people from across the country sent cards and letters here in the weeks leading up to February 14, hoping to have them re-stamped with the coveted heart-shaped "Valentine, AZ" postmark. Each year, the volume of mail doubled around Valentine's Day, turning the tiny post office into a hub of love-themed correspondence.
Tragically, this beloved tradition was interrupted in 1990 when postmistress Jacqueline Grigg was murdered during a robbery. In the wake of the tragedy, her family demolished the post office and left town. While the building is gone, the postmark lives on-now available through the Kingman Post Office for those who still wish to send a little love from "Valentine."
Today, one of Valentine's main attractions is Keepers of the Wild, an accredited non-profit wildlife sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and caring for neglected, abused, and abandoned animals. Visitors can choose between general admission or guided safari tours, offering a chance to see over 140 animals including big cats, grizzly and black bears, wolves, primates, and exotic birds. Nestled along Highway 66, (the park is located at 13441 E Highway 66) the sanctuary provides an unforgettable experience for travelers, blending conservation with the spirit of exploration that defines the Mother Road.
Valentine may be small, but its history is rich-with tales of love, loss, and compassion echoing across the desert. Whether you stop for its heartwarming legend, its wildlife sanctuary, or simply to savor the quiet beauty of Crozier Canyon, Valentine remains a unique and memorable stop along Route 66.
