About Two Guns, Arizona: A Ghost Town With A Curse
Perched along the 1926–1985 alignment of Historic Route 66 in Coconino County, just 20 minutes west of Winslow, Two Guns is one of the most chilling and storied ghost towns on the Mother Road. In its heyday, it was a bustling roadside stop, complete with a gas station, café, trading post, and even a small zoo, promising travelers a taste of the Wild West. Today, all that remains are sun-bleached ruins, graffiti-covered walls, and the enduring legends that keep curious visitors coming back.
The most infamous of those legends centers around the Apache Death Cave. According to local lore, in 1878 a group of Apache warriors sought refuge inside a cave hidden in the canyon here. When Navajo raiders discovered their hiding place, they blocked the entrance, trapping the Apaches inside. Every man perished, and the site quickly became shrouded in superstition. Over the decades, many claimed the cave was cursed, its dark history casting a shadow over anyone who tried to profit from it.
Two Guns' 20th-century history was just as colorful. In the 1920s, a stone bridge was built to carry the National Old Trails Highway, and later Route 66, across the gorge, making Two Guns a natural stop for motorists. Entrepreneurs saw opportunity here, opening the zoo, souvenir stands, and other attractions to lure passing travelers. But the site seemed plagued by misfortune: ownership disputes, mysterious fires, and sudden business closures became part of its narrative, reinforcing the belief that the "curse" of the Death Cave was still at work.
Today, adventurers can wander through the skeletal remains of the KOA campground, the crumbling trading post, and the bridge that once carried thousands of Route 66 travelers over the canyon. The surrounding high desert, with its stark beauty and endless sky, only amplifies the ghostly atmosphere.
Located near Meteor Crater and within reach of Winslow's famous Standin' on the Corner Park, Two Guns offers a glimpse into Route 66's wilder side: a place where the romance of the road meets the haunting echoes of the past. For those willing to explore, it's an unforgettable stop that embodies both the spirit and the mystery of the Mother Road.
