About Tijeras, New Mexico: A Crossroads of Two Legendary Roads
At the foot of the Sandia Mountains, Tijeras marks the crossroads of Route 66 and the Turquoise Trail Scenic Byway. From here, NM 14 winds north toward Santa Fe, a road lined with history, art and sky-blue stone.
Nestled in Tijeras Canyon, this small town holds deep roots. The nearby Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site (11776 Hwy 337 S.) reveals the remains of a 14th-century mountain village, once alive with trade, pottery and Pueblo tradition. Visitors can stroll the trails, explore interpretive exhibits or relax in the Heritage Garden, where native plants bloom beneath the desert sun.
Back in town, the pace slows. Wind chimes sing from porch rafters. The scent of juniper smoke drifts from hillside chimeneas. Locals refuel with red-chile burritos before climbing the canyon grade toward Albuquerque or Santa Fe.
