About Texola, Oklahoma: The Quirky Town on the Border
Texola is a small community located in Beckham County right on the Oklahoma–Texas border, situated along the historic 1926–1985 alignment of Route 66. Founded in 1901, the town, which once went by the names Texokla and Texoma, quickly became a bustling border stop, welcoming travelers with various amenities, including diners, gas stations, and the Tumbleweed Grill. Texola was even the subject of an early border dispute between the Oklahoma and Texas.
Today, Texola is a near-ghost town, its population having plummeted after the construction of I-40. Yet, its quirky charm and resilience live on through iconic landmarks that attract Route 66 enthusiasts. Must-see relics include the tiny 1910 jail, the restored Magnolia Mobil Gas Station, and the famous "There's No Place Like Texola" sign: an eccentric slogan perfect for a Mother Road photo stop.
The open plains, vintage signage, and fading brick storefronts offer photographers and history buffs a perfect glimpse into the Mother Road's quieter, more reflective side. As the final stop in Oklahoma before travelers head into Shamrock, TX, Texola offers a unique and unforgettable farewell to the Oklahoma section of Route 66.
