About Strafford, Missouri: A Town Split by Rails and Road
Strafford was originally founded in 1869 as a railroad town, with its first Main Street built parallel to the tracks. When Route 66 was commissioned in 1926, a second Main Street quickly developed along the highway. This created a lasting, unusual layout with two thriving centers of commerce side-by-side, thus earning Strafford its famous nickname: “The Town with 2 Main Streets.”
For Mother Road travelers, Strafford became a practical and welcoming stop in Greene County. The Strafford Garage, built in 1923, served motorists from the earliest days of cross-country car travel and remained an important landmark throughout the highway's heydey. Businesses like the 1930s roadside restaurant, the Red Cedar Inn, anchored Strafford as a dependable rest stop between Springfield and the rolling hills beyond.
Today, Strafford commemorates both its railroad and Route 66 heritage, preserving memories of its twin downtowns. Because of its close proximity to Springfield, the Birthplace of Route 66, Strafford is deeply connected to the broader history of the highway. With its dual Main Street configuration and deep sense of Ozark heritage, Strafford remains one of the most unique towns along the Mother Road.
