About Stanton, Missouri: Underground Workers on the Mother Road

Nestled in Franklin County along the historic 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66 and today's I-44, Stanton is forever linked with the magnificent Meramec Caverns. These sprawling linestove caves, first documented in 1716, have a layered past that blends geology, folklore and roadside Americana. Most famously, the caverns are rumoured to have sheltered the infamous outlaw Jesse James and his gang in the 1870s, a legend that stirs the imagination of visitors today.

By the late 19th century, Meramec Caverns had become a unique gathering spot, hosting lively "cave parties" for locals. But it was in 1933 that their destiny as a Route 66 icon was sealed, when showman Lester Dill transformed them into a premier tourist attraction. Dill not only illuminated the caverns for visitors but also pioneered the now-iconic bumper stickers that turned "See Meramec Caverns" into one of America's most recognizable roadside slogans.

Stanton's appeal extends beyond the caves. Attractions such as the Jesse James Wax Museum (temporarily closed as of September, 2025) and the Riverside Wildlife and Reptile Center (located at 275 Hwy W.) bring variety to the traveler's experience, adding layers of quirk and family fun. Meanwhile, nearby Route 66 car shows and Route 66 Cubafest keep the community tied to the living heritage of the Mother Road.

For travelers, Stanton represents the perfect crossroads of natural wonder, outlaw legend and roadside showmanship. Whether you come to explore its caverns (be sure to try the zipline), learn its outlaw history or simply to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of an Ozark town with a big story to tell, Stanton remains one of Route 66's most captivating stops.
