About Spencer, Missouri: A Preserved Ozark Landmark
Spencer sits along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66 in Lawrence County, just off MO-96. Founded in 1886, the town stayed small but had the essentials such as a post office, a school, and a general store. When Route 66 was commissioned, Spencer became a modest but meaningful roadside stop, offering supplies, fuel, and a sense of community for travelers winding through the Ozarks.
Back in the highway's heyday, Spencer offered a classic setup: a general store, a Sinclair gas station for motorists, and a small garage for roadside repairs. Those buildings anchored the town and became touchstones for travelers driving westward in the 1920s and 1930s. Even as Route 66 eventually bypassed the town and the facilities declined, Spencer's quiet charm endured.
In the early 2000s, preservationists Francis and Mary Ryan restored Spencer's four-building complex, including the gas station, store, and garage. Their work turned Spencer into one of Missouri's best-preserved roadside stops. Today, visitors can step back in time and imagine Route 66 as it once was-a two-lane road lined with places like Spencer, where the journey mattered as much as the destination.
