About Sequoyah, Oklahoma: Honoring a Cherokee Legacy on Route 66

Sequoyah is a small, unincorporated community in Rogers County, situated along the historic 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66, just outside of Claremore. Though modest in size, its name holds profound historical significance.

The community honors Sequoyah (circa 1770–1843), the renowned Cherokee leader and polymath. Sequoyah's most enduring achievement was the invention of the Cherokee syllabary in 1821, a writing system that swiftly brought widespread literacy to the Cherokee Nation and profoundly transformed Cherokee culture. This historical connection anchors the small town's identity.

For travelers on the "Mother Road," Sequoyah traditionally served as more of a pass-through than a major destination. In its prime, the town offered minimal Route 66 amenities, and today, any former gas stations or small shops are long gone. What remains is a quiet sense of place tied to its Native American heritage and the historic highway's legacy.

Sequoyah's proximity to attractions like the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore and annual events, such as the Claremore Mid America Route 66 Nationals & Family Festival, supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, ensures its continued presence in the Route 66 culture.

Driving through this unassuming stretch of the highway offers a poignant reminder: Route 66 is a tapestry woven not only with famous diners and neon signs but also with the deep stories and legacies of the people whose names still grace the map.
