About Sedillo, New Mexico: A High-Country Summit on the Mother Road
Perched at a commanding 7,102 feet in the piñon-juniper hills east of Albuquerque, Sedillo began as a 19th-century stop on the wagon road through Tijeras Canyon, named for the Sedillo family ranch that still grazes cattle nearby. When Route 66 was realigned in 1937, the two-lane highway curved over Sedillo Hill: a steep grade that tested Model A radiators and rewarded motorists with sweeping, dramatic views of the Estancia Valley behind them.
Roadside entrepreneurs quickly set up camp: a Whiting Bros. station pumped high-octane relief, a café served hearty green-chile stew to altitude-weary travelers and a hand-painted "ELEV 7102 FT" sign became a prized photo spot for sunburned families ticking off milestones on their cross-country trek. Truckers downshifted, honeymooners kissed beneath ponderosa pines and locals sold piñon nuts from the beds of turquoise pickups.
Though Interstate 40 now skirts Sedillo Hill on a broader cut, the old alignment (NM 333) still climbs the original grade. Its cracked pavement echoes with the ghosts of flathead V-8s and Greyhound buses bound for the Pacific.
