About Sampson, Missouri: A Vanished Hamlet on Route 66

Sampson stood on the 1926–1953 alignment of Route 66 in Webster County, nestled between Conway and Niangua. It began as a modest rural settlement with a post office, a small gas station, a general store, and even a tomato canning factory that supported local farming. By the 1930s, travelers could also stop at nearby landmarks such as Timber Hill Camp, O’Brien’s Cabins, and the memorably named Garbage Can Café, located right beside Lowery’s Service Station.

Like many small Route 66 towns, Sampson’s fortunes declined when the four-lane highway bypass arrived in 1953, cutting off steady traffic and shifting commerce toward the new I-44 corridor. Within a generation, most of the town’s businesses disappeared, leaving only faint traces near the railroad tracks. Today, Sampson is little more than a ghost on the map, a reminder of how quickly life along the Mother Road could vanish.

Though Sampson is a sleepy place in itself, its name lives on with the wider Route 66 heritage of Webster County and with nearby periodic events such as the Lebanon Route 66 Festival. Outside of that, there's not much to say.
