About Rosati, Missouri: A Taste of Italy on Route 66

Rosati, a small but historically significant community, is located on the 1926-1977 alignment of Historic Route 66 in the rolling foothills of the Ozarks. Its story begins in the 1880s, when Italian immigrants from Northern Italy settled in the area, drawn by its fertile farmland. Named after Bishop Joseph Rosati, St. Louis's first Catholic bishop, the community quickly became known for its grape farming, a tradition that continues to define its identity.

Rosati's Italian roots are evident in landmarks such as St. Anthony's Catholic Church, built in 1912, which remains a central piece of the community. When Route 66 came through, Rosati embraced its role as a stop on the Mother Road, with family-owned businesses like the Cardetti & Sons Mercantile Co. Store serving both locals and cross-country travelers from 1918 through the 1970s.

The town's greatest legacy, however, is its enduring winemaking tradition. The Rosati Winery, founded in 1934, produced wines from classic American grapes like Concord and Catawba, offering a living link to the vineyards planted generations ago. While this winery was an important part of the state's wine history, but the winery is no longer functioning. In its place, a museum was installed on the site, helping to preserve the history of Italian immigrants who settled in the area and established a grape-growing region. As an example, the community was once a major supplier of grapes for Welch's Grape Juice. At the time of this writing, the museum is temporarily closed.

Though quieter than some of its neighboring towns, Rosati's history and heritage remain deeply woven into the fabric of Route 66. Its proximity to larger celebrations such as Route 66 Cubafest ensures that the spirit of the Mother Road stays vibrant. For travelers seeking both culture and history, Rosati offers a unique stop where the flavors of Italy meet the story of the Main Street of America.
