About Rolla, Missouri: The Middle of Everything

Rolla sits in the heart of Phelps County along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Originally a 19th century railroad town, Rolla soon became a pivotal stop along the Mother Road, blending historic charm with modern culture. Positioned at the crossroads of Historic Route 66 and I-44, Rolla has earned its nickname "The Middle of Everywhere," both geographically and culturally.

During the heydey of Route 66, travelers found rest at classic motels like Zeno's (demolished in the early 2010s), and fueled up at roadside favorites like the Mule Trading Post. The site of Mule Trading Post has now been replaced with an axe-throwing game center and diner called Ole Mule Axes n' Fun.

Today, vintage icons remain from the long-standing Totem Pole Trading Post (dating back to the 1930s) to the glowing Rolla Bowl neon sign, which is an excellent photo opportunity for wanderers looking to capture the vibe.
