About Red Top, Missouri: A Roadside Feast on the Mother Road

Red Top lies on the 1926–1953 alignment of Route 66 in Webster County, near today’s I-44. Named either for the reddish soil in the area or a store’s red-topped roof, the community never grew large. It carved out a spot in Route 66 history though, thanks to one standout business: Otto’s Steak House.

Founded mid-century, Otto's quickly became an institution for travelers cruising through the Ozarks in search of a hot, reliable meal. Famous for robust portions of steak, home-style vegetables and potatoes served in a cozy setting, it captured the essence of the Mother Road: comforting and just a tad decadent. For many families, stopping at Otto's made the trip complete. Coupled with the neon lights and vintage motels dotting the highway, this entire area was a necessary and unforgettable stop.

Even though Otto’s eventually closed and Red Top has lapsed into humble obscurity, the community is still connected to the highway’s heritage. Proximity to Springfield’s Route 66 Car Museum and events such as the Lebanon Route 66 Festival keep its history alive, and the remembrance of Otto’s brings back memories of fine cuisine and companionship along the open road. To travelers who venture into the more serene aspects of Route 66, Red Top is an appetizing piece of Americana worth a visit.
