About Phillipsburg, Missouri: Horses, Highways and Bigfoot Legends
Founded in the 1870s along the old Wire Road, Phillipsburg grew into a small but lively town in Laclede County. With the arrival of Route 66 in 1926, it became a convenient stop for motorists, offering service stations like Twin Oaks Texaco and cafés such as The Underpass Café. The town’s very name, drawn from the Greek for “horse lover,” reflects the area’s long equestrian traditions.
Travelers through Phillipsburg were also greeted by two barns advertising Meramec Caverns, painted by the legendary Lester B. Dill. These bold roadside ads became part of Route 66’s identity, linking the town to one of Missouri’s most famous attractions.
But Phillipsburg is also remembered for a more surprising claim to fame. In 2014, a couple reported spotting a towering, 7-foot-tall figure near I-44 outside of town, adding Bigfoot to the Mother Road's lore. While the sighting remains unproven as of this writing, it gave Phillipsburg a place in cryptozoological legend and a new layer of mystery for curious travelers.
Though bypassed by modernization, Phillipsburg’s Mother Road spirit is celebrated nearby at the annual Lebanon Route 66 Festival, where history, culture, and a touch of folklore come together to keep its legacy alive.
