About Ocoya, Illinois: A Mile Marker on the Mother Road

Ocoya is a tiny but memorable farming community in McLean County, just off the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Established in the 1850s, Ocoya has long been known by its distinctive claim to fame: "100 Miles West of Chicago."

This rural village has fewer than 50 residents today, but it leaves a big impression thanks to its towering grain elevators, which stand as sentinels for travelers crossing the Illinois prairie. These structures have become unofficial landmarks for those charting their progress along the Mother Road.

While Ocoya itself is small and serene, nearby Chenoa offers additional Route 66 charm, including the historic Chenoa Pharmacy (est. 1889) with its preserved small town storefront. Together, these stops provide a glimpse into what road travel looked like in the mid-20th century.

Each May, Ocoya and its neighboring communities join in the annual Red Carpet Corridor Festival, inviting Route 66 fans to slow down, take photos and experience the simple beauty of this stretch of Illinois highway.

For travelers seeking authenticity, Ocoya delivers a snapshot of rural America: quiet, scenic and perfectly placed on the journey westward.
