About Oakhurst, Oklahoma: A Community Built on Oil and Opportunity

Oakhurst sits on the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Tulsa County, just southwest of downtown Tulsa. While unincorporated, Oakhurst played an important role in the region's oil-driven expansion in the early 20th century. Its story begins with the 1905 discovery of the Glenn Pool oil field, a strike so significant it ignited Oklahoma's first major oil boom. The wealth and growth sparked by this "black gold" led to the town's nickname: the Black Gold Gateway.

For Route 66 travelers, Oakhurst served as a modest waypoint rather than a bustling tourist stop. Small service stations, repair shops, and a general store provided essential fuel and supplies for motorists heading into or out of Tulsa. While most of those early businesses are gone, the community's identity remains tied to its oil heritage.

Oakhurst's proximity means visitors can explore nearby Mother Road attractions in Tulsa, such as the Route 66 Historical Village, the Meadow Gold Neon Sign, and the 66th Street Archway. Annual events like the Tulsa Route 66 RoadFest, supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, ensure that the region's rich history continues to be celebrated.

Today, Oakhurst is a quiet, close-knit community, but its history as a gateway to Oklahoma's "black gold" era ensures it will always hold a unique and important place in the story of Route 66.
