About Niangua, Missouri: A Welcoming Pause on Route 66
Niangua is located on the 1926–1953 alignment of Route 66 in Webster County. It was named for the Niangua River, whose name descends from the Native American word which translates 'bear,' highlighting the abundance of black bears in the Osage region. Niangua was established in the 1870s and expanded when the railroad arrived and further still when travelers found the town along the most celebrated highway of America.
In the 1930s and ’40s, establishments such as the Rockhaven Restaurant, Oak Vale Park cabins, and area filling stations made the town a convenient stop. In 1953, Route 66 was realigned and like countless other original Route 66 towns, Niangua was skipped by the new four-lane highway, which is now part of I-44.
Today, the nearby Conway Rest Area Eastbound stands as both a rest stop and an unique Route 66 memorial and is just a short drive from Niangua Junction. Additionally, the Niangua Conservation Area, a 15-minute drive from Niangua, is worth a stop for excellent hiking, fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing.
Niangua's legacy is closely tied to nearby Lebanon, a larger Route 66 hub that keeps the region's heritage alive with its annual Lebanon Route 66 Festival, car shows, and historic displays. Together, Niangua and Lebanon celebrate the distinct unique culture of the Mother Road, while inviting travelers to pause, explore and connect with Missouri's piece of Route 66 history.
