About Newburg, Missouri: From Railroad Hub to Route 66 Haven
Newburg sits in Phelps County along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66, with roots that stretch back to the railroad boom in the late 1800s. Founded in 1884 as a bustling rail town, Newburg thrived as a shipping and trading center before the rise of automobiles shifted the spotlight to the highway. When Route 66 came through, the community adapted quickly, welcoming a new wave of cross-country travelers.
Among the most iconic businesses to emerge was Vernelle's Motel. Opened in the 1940s, it became a classic stop on the Mother Road, known for its friendly service, comfortable rooms and its glowing neon sign that promised rest for weary travelers. Though it closed in the 2000s, the site at 10887 Arlington Rd. still carries the spirit of Vernelle's and with plans for a future RV park, the location will continue its tradition of serving travelers.
Newburg's story doesn't begin or end with Route 66. The town's historic district preserves landmarks from its railroad heydey, including the 1903 Ozark House and the John A. Gahr General Store. These buildings stand as reminders of Newburg's layered history, where rail lines and highways alike shaped the community's identity.
Today, Newburg offers visitors a quiet but meaningful stop along Historic Route 66. With its ties to both the railroad and the highway, plus natural beauty from the nearby Little Piney River, the town represents the crossroads of Missouri's transportation history. Its proximity to events like Rolla's Route 66 Summerfest and the Route 66 Cubafest help to keep Newburg's legacy alive, ensuring that Newburg remains a cherished part of the Mother Road's story.
