About Newberry Springs, California: Where Hollywood Met the Mother Road

Newberry Springs is a true desert oasis nestled along Historic Route 66 that holds a unique place in both cinematic and American road trip history. While its origins are tied to the Santa Fe Railroad and its formal growth began with the commissioning of U.S. Route 66 in 1926, the town gained international fame as the primary filming location for the 1987 cult classic film, Bagdad Cafe. This cinematic connection transformed a humble roadside stop into a global pilgrimage site for movie fans and Route 66 road trippers.

In its heyday during the 1940s and 1950s, Newberry Springs was an indispensable, bustling hub, offering a full array of amenities and much-needed respite in the expansive Mojave Desert. The most enduring symbol of the town's charm and history is the actual roadside diner used in the film. Although the cafe is officially named the Bagdad Cafe (a tribute to the nearby ghost town of Bagdad, CA), its quirky appeal and resilience have made it a living monument to the spirit of the Mother Road. Despite the decline in traffic following the construction of Interstate 40 in the 1970s, the cafe's continued operation is a testament to the power of nostalgia and the timeless allure of the open road.
