About Mt. Olive, Illinois: A Town of Grit and Granite

While many Route 66 towns dazzle with neon lights, Mt. Olive is built on something stronger: America's labor history. Located on the both the 1930-1940 alignment and the 1940-1977 alignment of Route 66, which bypassed the business district, Mt. Olive earned its place on the map through coal mining, union organizing and the determination of its people.

At the heart of the town lies Union Miners Cemetery, the only union-owned cemetery in the United States and the final resting place of Mother Jones herself. Her 22-foot pink granite monument, dedicated in 1936, honors her lifelong fight for workers' rights and commemorates the miners lost in the 1898 Battle of Virden. The monument is not just a gravesite but a pilgrimage point for labor historians and Route 66 wanderers seeking a deeper connection to America's illustrious past.

Just minutes away, the Soulsby Service Station, one of the oldest filling stations still standing on Route 66, serves as a reminder of the road's golden era. With its original gas pumps and weathered structure, the station captures the rugged charm of a time when the open road was young and every stop told a story of hard work and hospitality.
