About Morgan Heights, Missouri: A Lost Stop on Route 66
Morgan Heights once stood along the historic 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66 in Pulaski County, near present-day I-44. An unincorporated settlement named for the elevated terrain, it served as a modest but reliable stop for travelers during the early 20th century. Gas pumps, a general store and small lodgings once catered to motorists making their way through the Ozarks.
Like many small communities along the Mother Road, Morgan Heights faded as traffic shifted away from Route 66. By the late 20th century, little remained beyond scattered foundations, fading signs and the amazing memories carried by longtime locals. Its disappearance reflects the broader story of countless small towns that rose quickly with the opening of the highway and just-as-quickly declined as the bypasses dramatically alternated the number of travelers traveling through Morgan Heights.
Though little physical evidence of Morgan Heights survives, its proximity to Fort Leonard Wood and neighboring Waynesville connects it to the larger Route 66 story of the area. The Pulaski County Courthouse in Waynesville, the old bridges and the roadside landmarks remind visitors of the bustling life that once surrounded these now-vanished hamlets.
Today, the community's memory is kept alive through local history efforts and the nearby Route 66 Hogs and Frogs Festival, where even forgotten towns are celebrated as being key parts of the Mother Road's enduring legacy. For travelers and collectors, Morgan Heights is a poignant reminder that Route 66 is as much about the places that vanished as the ones that are still thriving.
