About Montoya, New Mexico: A Stone Oasis on the Mother Road

Established in 1902 as a siding on the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, Montoya quickly became a vital outpost for ranchers trailing cattle off the vast Bell Ranch and the windswept Llano Estacado.

Richardson Square

Local entrepreneur J.A. Richardson cemented the town's place in history when he quarried rose-colored sandstone from nearby mesas to build a striking complex of storefronts, a garage, and his family residence.

Known today as Richardson Square, these fortress-like walls and graceful arched parapets offered weary cowboys, homesteaders, and later Route 66 travelers a solid refuge from blistering sun and relentless prairie winds.

When Route 66 arrived in 1926, Richardson's general store became a lifeline for cross-country motorists: pumping gasoline, stocking groceries and serving ice-cold sodas. Families picnicked beneath shade cottonwoods, swapped stories with ranch hands at the pump and mailed postcards from the tiny post office tucked inside the stone walls.

Montoya Today

Though Interstate 40 bypassed Montoya in the 1950s, Richardson Square still stands sentinel on the plains, its weathered keystones and fading "GARAGE" sign echoing with memories of Model T's, freight wagons, and westbound dreamers.

Pull off the old two-lane highway, walk the sun-cracked sidewalks between Richardson's home and trading post, and listen for the ghosts of hoofbeats and rumbling engines that once filled this high-desert crossroads.

Your Montoya tee is a tribute to Richardson Square's enduring stone and to the grit of those who built, traveled, and dreamed along the Main Street of America.
