About Monrovia, California: Where the Road Meets the Aztec Hotel
Monrovia, affectionately known as the "Gem of the Foothills," is a picturesque city nestled against the majestic San Gabriel Mountains along Historic Route 66. Founded in the 1880s by a railroad pioneer, Monrovia blossomed from a portion of the vast Rancho Santa Anita.
With the formal establishment of U.S. Route 66 in 1926, which ran right through the city, Monrovia became a vibrant and essential stop. In its mid-century heyday, it offered a full array of classic road trip amenities, from motels to diners, all set amidst the City's fragrant citrus groves.
Monrovia's crowning jewel and a true architectural marvel is the iconic Aztec Hotel. Designed by Robert Stacy-Judd and built to coincide with the opening of the Mother Road, this National Historic Landmark is a stunning, unique example of Mayan Revival architecture. Its distinctive motifs and otherworldly appearance created an unforgettable impression for travelers and cemented its status as a must-see Route 66 roadside attraction.
Today, though Interstate 210 eventually bypassed the historic alignment, Monrovia actively embraces its past. Its charming Old Town on Myrtle Avenue and the preserved Aztec Hotel blend rich history with a welcoming "Hometown USA" spirit, making it a captivating stop for contemporary California Route 66 adventurers.
