About Meteor City, Arizona: Big Personality, Tiny Town
Despite its grand-sounding name, Meteor City isn't a city, town or even a village. Instead, it's a cosmic curiosity that became one of the most famous "smallest towns" in America.
Located along the south side of Historic Route 66 in Coconino County, just off I-40, Meteor City's heyday revolved around a single, massive geodesic dome operated by a husband-and-wife team who also lived on-site. For years, the official population was proudly posted as "2," giving the trading post its tongue-in-cheek claim to being the tiniest community on the Mother Road (and the second smallest in all of the US with Monowi, NE having only one resident).
The trading post was instantly recognizable for its dome, colorful murals, and playful, alien-inspired décor. Travelers were drawn in by quirky attractions, souvenir shopping, and one particularly memorable roadside brag: the "World's Longest Map of Route 66."
This hand-painted mural stretched the entire length of the building, allowing visitors to trace the Mother Road in one sweeping view before stepping inside to browse postcards, Route 66 T-shirts, and trinkets celebrating the road and the nearby meteor crater (Barringer Crater).
For decades, Meteor City embodied the offbeat magic that makes Route 66 so special. It wasn't about being big; it was about being memorable. Families stopped for photos under the dome, and the trading post became a beloved checkpoint between Flagstaff and Winslow.
Though the trading post is now closed and its murals have faded, the legend lives on. But Meteor City is now a ghost city. This iconic stop is a symbolic reminder that the Mother Road is about more than just major cities and grand attractions: it's about the small, strange, and delightful places that stick in your memory long after the journey ends.
