About Mesita, New Mexico: A Pueblo Crossroads Watched by Owl Rock

Perched along the 1926 alignment of Route 66 (today's NM 124), Mesita is a satellite village of Laguna Pueblo, whose name fittingly means "little mesa." The settlement's true claim to fame rises just east of town: Owl Rock.

Owl Rock is a majestic sandstone monolith whose weather-carved hollows resemble wide eyes staring across the Rio San José. Early motorists swore those eyes glowed at dusk, and advertisers once painted roadside slogans on the cliff face, turning the natural landmark into a towering billboard for passing Tin Lizzies (Model Ts).

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Owl Rock became a must-stop photo opportunity. Families picnicked in its shadow, traders sold turquoise trinkets from roadside stands and bus drivers paused so passengers could snap a postcard worthy shot.

Even after I-40 swept mainline traffic north in the 1960s, loyalists of Old Route 66 still detour to greet the silent "owl," its sandstone feathers glowing pink at sunrise.

Today, Mesita offers a beautiful window into Pueblo life, with adobe homes basking under the high-desert sun, fields of blue corn, and feast-day dances echoing beneath towering mesas. Swing off the interstate, follow the two-lane ribbon past Owl Rock, and feel the hush of centuries-old pathways that long predate the arrival of the Mother Road.
