About Manchester, Missouri: Hospitality on America's Main Street
Manchester, a city in St. Louis County, lies along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66 on Manchester Road (MO-100). Though officially incorporated in 1950, its role as a travel hub stretches back much further, strengthened by the arrival of the Mother Road. As Route 66 grew in popularity, Manchester blossomed with motels, diners and service stations, serving as a welcoming waypoint for countless cross-country travelers.
Among its most notable landmarks was the Tourist Hotel, which stood near the intersection of Manchester and Barrett Station Roads in the 1930s and 1940s. Modest in size yet rich in hospitality, the hotel became a trusted stop for motorists seeking rest and comfort on their journey. While the building is no longer standing, its memory endures as a symbol of the town's welcoming spirit. Other establishments, like the La Casa Grande Motel, further contributed to the lively mid-century atmosphere that defined Manchester's place along the highway.
Today, Manchester embraces both its history and its modern identity. Its proximity to St. Louis makes it an ideal gateway for travelers eager to explore both the City and Route 66 local landmarks. Community pride shines during events like the annual Route 66 St. Louis Festival, which brings together classic cars, retro markets and live entertainment in celebration of the Main Street of America.
Another significant historic building in Manchester is the lovely Lyceum Building, originally constructed in 1894 and later restored in 1977. The Lycecum became the location of City Hall in 1979 until City Hall was recently relocated to the nearby Commerce Bank building. Now the Lyceum building hosts the Manchester Arts Hub. These buildings and traditions ensure that the story of Route 66 in Manchester continues to be told, blending nostalgia with community spirit for a new generation of travelers.
