About Lupton, Arizona: A Hollywood Gateway to Navajoland

Lupton is a small community in Apache County located along the historic 1926–1985 alignment of Route 66, straddling the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Situated on deeded land within the vast Navajo Nation, the area is known in Navajo as Tse Si Ani ("Setting Rock"). It is dramatically framed by the stunning red and ochre hues of the Painted Cliffs and towering sandstone bluffs.

The town, named in 1905 after a Santa Fe Railway train master, has served as a crucial border crossing for over a century. Today, Route 66 travelers still stop at essential landmarks like the Chief Yellowhorse Trading Post—a major Navajo-owned landmark known for authentic Native American crafts—and the historic Lupton Port of Entry. Adding to its lore, Lupton even appeared in the 1940 John Ford film, The Grapes of Wrath.

With the Painted Cliffs Rest Area providing a striking first impression, Lupton continues to honor its rich Navajo heritage while welcoming visitors to the Mother Road. Supported by the Arizona Route 66 Association and connected to the scenic Diné Bii'tah Scenic Byway, Lupton is a must-visit stop for its unique cultural significance and breathtaking natural beauty.
