About Lincoln, Illinois: Where Presidential Legacy Meets the Mother Road

Lincoln is a city steeped in history, located in Logan County along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66.  Founded in 1853 and incorporated in 1857, it holds the singular honor of being the only city named for Abraham Lincoln with his personal blessing. In a lighthearted ceremony in 1853, Lincoln christened the town with watermelon juice: an event now commemorated by the Lincoln Watermelon Monument at 101 North Chicago St., where a giant watermelon sculpture draws curious travelers.

The city preserves its connection to Lincoln's early legal career through the Postville Courthouse State Historic Site at 914 South Fifth St., a replica of the 1848 courthouse where Lincoln once practiced law. Beyond its presidential ties, Lincoln is also home to some of Route 66's most beloved roadside icons. Chief among them is the Railsplitter Covered Wagon, which stands proudly along the highway as the world's largest covered wagon - a whimsical nod to frontier life and a favorite photo stop.

Each may, Lincoln comes alive during the annual Red Carpet Corridor events, welcoming Route 66 fans with community celebrations that honor both its local history and its enduring ties to the Mother Road.

With its unique presidential christening, its blend of history and roadside Americana, and its enduring community spirit, Lincoln stand as a living monument to both Abraham Lincoln stands as a living monument to both Abraham Lincoln and the legacy of Route 66.
