About Lexington, Illinois: Where Route 66 Lives Again

Lexington, Illinois is a historic community in McLean County, proudly located along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Settled in 1826, and later incorporated in 1861, Lexington blends prairie history with highway nostalgia in a way that few towns can.

The centerpiece of Lexington is the Route 66 Memory Lane, a lovingly restored, one-mile section of the original Route 66 pavement. Restored in 1990, the lane features vintage Burma-Shave signs and historic billboards that recreate the roadside charm of the highway's mid-century heydey. This living time capsule offers travelers a rare chance to walk or drive the road exactly as it looked nearly a century ago.

Lexington's history stretches back even further. The John Patton Log Cabin, built in 1829, is the oldest building in McLean County and a preserved reminder of pioneer life. Follow these John Patton Log Cabin directions to drop in.

The Lexington Depot Museum celebrated the area's railroad heritage, with exhibits tracing the town's growth since 1854. Each May, Lexington celebrates its place in highway history by participating in the Red Carpet Corridor Festival, inviting classic car enthusiasts and Route 66 travelers to relive the sights and sounds of the Mother Road.

Through its dedication to preservation, Lexington offers one of the most authentic Route 66 experiences in Illinois, proving it's not just a stop along the road, but rather a journey back into time.
