About Laguna, New Mexico: The Oldest Church on Route 66
Situated along the sandstone bluffs of the Rio San José, Laguna Pueblo was established in 1699 by Keresan peoples returning after the Pueblo Revolt. At its heart stands the magnificent San José de la Laguna Mission and Convento, completed the same year. This towering adobe sanctuary, with its thick walls, exposed vigas, and original 18th-century altar, still echoes with hymns sung in both Keres and Spanish.
When Historic Route 66 was laid through the pueblo in 1926 (today's NM 124), passing motorists glimpsed the mission's whitewashed bell towers rising majestically above clay-brick homes and vibrant turquoise-painted doors. Many stopped to photograph the sun-baked plaza, purchase beautiful hand-coiled pottery or to attend the annual Saint Joseph Feast Day, when dancers in feathered regalia circle the church in a vibrant swirl of drums, bells, and corn pollen.
Though I-40 now rushes by just to the north, Laguna's old Mother Road alignment invites travelers to slow down, breathe in the scent of horno-baked bread, and witness a community where traditions have endured for centuries beneath a stunning desert sky.
