About Jericho, Texas: Watch Out for the Jericho Gap
In the early days of Route 66, Jericho was notorious for its treacherous stretch of the highway. Before the road was fully paved, this section of the Texas Panhandle became a quagmire of thick mud whenever it rained, trapping motorists in what locals came to call the Jericho Gap. Drivers would pay local farmers to tow them out, making Jericho both a headache and a small roadside industry during the highway's formative years.
The town itself began as a modest settlement along the Chicago, Rock Island & Gulf Railroad, with a store, a church, and a handful of homes. But it never grew beyond a tiny stopover. As Route 66 improved and was rerouted, Jericho faded into obscurity. Today, only scattered remnants, such as weathered building foundations and a cemetery, hint at the brief life of this Panhandle community.
