About Hydro, Oklahoma: The Heart of Lucille's Legacy
Hydro is a small town in Caddo County located along the historic 1926–1985 alignment of Route 66. Founded in 1901, Hydro flourished as a key stop for Mother Road travelers after the opening of Lucille's Place in 1929. This landmark gas station and motel, located at Old 66 and S. Coleman Ave. quickly became a lifeline for weary motorists.
While many small communities faded after Interstate 40 opened, Hydro remains legendary thanks to one woman: Lucille Hamons. Lucille ran the business from 1941 until her passing in 2000, operating the station and motel for decades. Her unwavering support and famous hospitality for countless travelers earned her the well-deserved title, "Mother of the Mother Road." Even as the interstate reduced traffic, Lucille kept her doors open and her iconic neon sign glowing.
Today, the restored Lucille's Place (also known as Provine Service Station) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and stands as a key historic landmark and museum. It remains a pilgrimage site for Route 66 enthusiasts worldwide, serving as a tangible tribute to Lucille's spirit.
Beyond the famous stop, Hydro is known for its peanut farming heritage, adding local flavor to its profile. Though small, Hydro's connection to a true Route 66 icon ensures its continued place in highway history.
Annual regional events, like the Heartland Cruise Car Show in nearby Weatherford, OK, help keep Lucille's legacy and Hydro's crucial role on the Mother Road alive, welcoming visitors with the same spirit of generosity that Lucille Hamons exemplified.
