About Houck, Arizona: A Hollywood Stop in Navajo Territory

Houck rests along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Apache County, tracing both Historic Route 66 and I-40 within the Navajo Nation. The town was named after James D. Houck, a rancher and trader who arrived in the 1870s and established a trading post to serve local Navajo families.

Once a bustling stop for Mother Road travelers, Houck featured several trading posts and the 1960s-era Fort Courage: a replica frontier outpost inspired by the TV show F Troop. Today, the site is partially abandoned but remains a nostalgic roadside relic. While Fort Courage is permanently closed and much of it now sits abandoned, Fort Courage's weathered façade remains a nostalgic photo stop for modern-day Route 66 explorers.

Be sure to check out ADOT's Painted Cliffs Rest Area, which appeared as a filming location in the 1951 Kirk Douglas film Ace in the Hole, directed by Billy Wilder. In nearby Lupton, scenes from the 1940 classic The Grapes of Wrath were also filmed. Let's not forget, Forrest Gump ran through nearby Twin Arrows, making this stretch of Route 66 a cinematic gem.

The local Navajo community continues to share its heritage through handcrafted goods and cultural experiences. With nearby landmarks like Lupton's Painted Cliffs and the support of annual Route 66 events backed by the Arizona Route 66 Association, Houck proudly blends Arizona's cinematic history, cultural depth, and scenic beauty-welcoming visitors to the Grand Canyon State.
