About Holbrook, Arizona: A Neon-Lit Slice of the Mother Road
Located approximately 90 miles east of Flagstaff in Navajo County, Holbrook was established in 1881 as a railroad town. It rapidly grew into a crucial waypoint for ranchers, settlers, and travelers. When Route 66 was formally established in 1926, Holbrook enthusiastically embraced its role as a highway hub, catering to motorists with an array of classic motels, cafés, and service stations whose brilliant neon signs illuminated the high-desert night.
Holbrook's most famous and celebrated landmark is the Wigwam Motel, built in 1950. This exceptional spot is one of only three surviving examples of the original "seven teepee-style" motels across the United States. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Wigwam Motel features 15 concrete teepees arranged in a semi-circle, offering a unique stay steeped in mid-century Americana. Rows of vintage cars are typically parked out front, creating a postcard-perfect scene for Route 66 travelers and photographers.
Other classic inns, like The Globetrotter Lodge, help keep the vintage vibe alive, often displaying restored neon that recalls the highway's golden age. Throughout town, enthusiasts can also spot remnants of the Whiting Brothers gas station chain and the long-closed Plainsman Coffee Shop.
For history buffs, the Navajo County Historical Museum, housed in the town's original 1898 courthouse, offers deep exhibits on Route 66, Native American culture, pioneer life, and the region's Wild West past. Holbrook's rowdier origins are captured in the infamous legend of the Bucket of Blood Saloon, which harks back to the days when cattle rustlers and railroad workers populated the dusty streets.
Today, Holbrook serves as a convenient gateway to the Petrified Forest National Park and Painted Desert, offering the perfect mix of man-made nostalgia and natural wonder. Annual events like the Holbrook Route 66 Festival , supported by the Arizona Route 66 Association, bring the community to life with classic car shows and celebrations. With its blend of vintage motels and small-town hospitality, Holbrook remains a living postcard from the golden age of American road travel, inviting you to pull over and step back in time on the Mother Road.
