About Hofflins, Missouri: A Forgotten Stop on Route 66
Hofflins is a poignant ghost town in Crawford County and located along the original 1926-1954 alignment of the Mother Road. Settled in the 1850s and named after Walter Hofflin when the Frisco Railroad arrived in 1858, the community grew around its small store and post office, serving as a modest but important waypoint for early travelers. For a time, Hofflins provided the essentials of frontier life while also linking to the broader story of Route 66.
The decline of Hofflins began long before many other Route 66 towns faded. The post office closed in 1943 and in 1954 the highway was realigned to bypass the community altogether. With traffic diverted elsewhere, businesses shuttered and homes emptied, leaving only scattered remnants of what had once been a thriving stop. Today, Hofflins is a quiet ghost town and its history has been marked by silence and memory rather than neon-lit signs and busy motels.
Though little remains, traces of its past survive. A former café and gas station still stand on the upgraded four-lane alignment nearby, offering a tangible, if weathered, link to the road's heydey. For modern travelers, visiting Hofflins is less about bustling attractions and more about reflection. The town provides a reminder of how quickly fortunes changed when the lifeline of Route 66 shifted course.
The story of Hofflins endures not only in its ruins but also through the living Route 66 community. Events like Route 66 Cubafest in nearby Cuba, MO ensures that the memory of places like Hofflins is preserved and reminding visitors that even the smallest towns played an important role in shaping the legend of the Mother Road.
