About Heatonville, Missouri: Stone Cabins of the Ozarks
Heatonville, Missouri sits along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66 in Lawrence County, just off MO-96. Founded in the 1860s, the community stayed small, but when Route 66 was commissioned in 1926, it suddenly found itself on America's greatest highway. Like many Ozark stops, Heatonville quickly adapted to serve travelers, offering gas, food, and shelter as they climbed the rugged hills.
The standout attraction was the Castlerock Cabins, also known as Heaton's Camp, a tourist court built in the 1930s. It featured hand-laid stone cottages, a café, and a gas station, giving travelers rustic lodging at affordable pricing during the heyday of Route 66. With their sturdy stone construction and cottage-style charm, the Castlerock Cabins became a beloved stop for families making the long trip west. By the 1960s, as the interstate bypassed the town, business faded, but several cabins still stand, partially restored as a visible piece of Route 66 heritage.
Today, Heatonville remains a quiet rural community, but the Castlerock Cabins stand as a tangible reminder of the era when motor courts defined the roadside landscape. Nearby attractions like Carthage's Boots Court Motel and Springfield's Birthplace of Route 66 Festival continue to draw travelers through the region, helping Heatonville's story stay woven into the greater tapestry of the Mother Road. For Route 66 enthusiasts, the cabins offer a nostalgic glimpse into a simpler, slower-paced time.
