About Groom, Texas: The Leaning Tower of Texas

Tucked along the Texas Panhandle stretch of Historic Route 66, the small town of Groom packs an outsized punch when it comes to roadside Americana. Its most famous landmark, the Leaning Tower of Texas, has been stopping travelers in their tracks for decades.

Once a functioning water tower, it was rescued from demolition by Ralph Britten, who anchored it in the ground at a dramatic angle to draw attention to his nearby Britten Truck Stop and Café. The result was a gravity-defying masterpiece of roadside marketing that quickly became one of Route 66’s most photographed oddities. Though the truck stop is long gone, the tower still stands proudly as a whimsical testament to the Mother Road’s creative spirit.

A Cross and a Community

Beyond its famous tilt, Groom is also home to one of the most awe-inspiring monuments on the Plains: the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ, soaring 190 feet high and ranking among the tallest crosses in the Western Hemisphere.

Visible for miles across the flat Panhandle horizon, the cross and its surrounding sculptures draw visitors from around the world. It’s located just off Interstate 40 on Exit 112.

Groom Today

During Route 66’s golden years, Groom thrived as a classic small-town stop, offering fuel, food, and friendly smiles to travelers crossing Texas’s wide-open spaces. Though time and the interstate have changed the pace, Groom continues to captivate visitors chasing the nostalgic spirit of the Mother Road.

Whether you’re snapping a photo of the Leaning Tower, reflecting at the Cross of Our Lord, or simply taking in the vast prairie views, Groom stands as a perfect reminder that even the smallest towns can leave the biggest impressions along Route 66.
