About Granite City, Illinois: Forged in Steel

Some Route 66 towns are built for tourism but Granite City was built for work. Located near the final Illinois stretch before the Mississippi River crossing, Granite City became an industrial giant thanks to the vision of the Niedringhaus brothers, who brought their Graniteware production here in 1896. Their enamel-coated cookware became a household staple and gave the City both its name and its economic engine.

Granite City's spirit is reflected in its landmarks. The mighty Chain of Rocks Bridge, a 1929 steel truss marvel, once carried Route 66 travelers across the Mississippi on their way to the western frontier. Though closed to vehicles, it now serves as a pedestrian and bike path, offering unforgettable views of the river and a chance to stand where generations of travelers once crossed.

Today, Granite City continues to honor its blue-collar roots. The United States Steel Corporation's Granite City Works remains an active reminder of the town's industrial heart, while the Tri-City Speedway keeps the adrenaline pumping with high speed thrills. Granite City proves that the Mother Road isn't just about nostalgia but also its about the places where American grit was forged.
