Part of the Route 66 Everytown Collection - Glenrio Edition

Crafted from our ultra-soft 100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton, this unisex jersey tee blends comfort with the bittersweet nostalgia of the Mother Road. It boasts the evocative “State Line Ghost Town” slogan in tribute to Glenrio, a once-thriving Route 66 stopover straddling the Texas–New Mexico border that has since lapsed into silence.

Ideal for state hoppers, history buffs, and the devoted fans of our exclusive Route 66 Everytown Collection, the tee preserves the haunting appeal of Glenrio. Even though its motels, cafes, and service stations now sit mainly empty, the town is still one of the most photographed and lasting ghost towns of Route 66 and stands as a testament to the boom and bust of America’s most celebrated highway.

About Glenrio, Texas: A Route 66 Ghost Town on the State Line

Straddling the Texas and New Mexico state-line, Glenrio is one of the most evocative ghost towns on Historic Route 66. Founded in the early 1900s as a small railroad stop, Glenrio came to life during the golden era of the Mother Road.

Its unique location made it a natural stopping point for travelers entering or leaving the Lone Star State. During its peak in the 1940s and 1950s, Glenrio bustled with roadside motels, diners, and service stations, and even boasted a drive-in theater where families could watch movies under the vast desert sky.

A Town Divided and Then Deserted

Glenrio’s geography gave it a quirky claim to fame: the state line literally cuts through its main street. Gas stations stood on the Texas side, where fuel taxes were cheaper, while the New Mexico side hosted the bars, since liquor sales were prohibited across the border. The two towns had a symbiotic relationship.

But progress, as with so many Route 66 communities, was unkind. When Interstate 40 bypassed Glenrio in the 1970s, the steady stream of travelers disappeared almost overnight, leaving behind a haunting tableau of abandoned businesses and sun-faded signs.

Glenrio Today

Today, Glenrio remains a ghost town frozen in time, its silent gas pumps, boarded-up café, and crumbling motel standing as eerie monuments to the rise and fall of America’s most famous highway. Designated a National Register Historic District, it draws photographers, travelers, and history enthusiasts from around the world who come to walk its deserted streets, where one step keeps you in Texas, and the next takes you into New Mexico.

Glenrio captures the haunting beauty of Route 66’s legacy: a place where state lines blur, time stands still, and the spirit of the open road endures.
