About Glenrio, New Mexico: A Village on the State Line
Founded in 1903 as a Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad camp called Rock Island, the settlement soon adopted the name Glenrio: a mash-up of Scottish "glen" and Spanish "río," nodding to the grassy draws and dry creek beds that carve the mesa.
When Historic Route 66 arrived in 1926, travelers discovered a quirky village literally bisected by the state line. Gas stations lined the tax-friendly New Mexico side, while Texas bars kept the taps flowing late into the night.
Through the 1940s and 1950s, Glenrio thrummed with roadside life. The brick-front Brownlee Diner dished out chicken-fried steak, the Little Juarez Curio Shop served hot chile, and the State-Line Bar promised one last round before the long prairie drive.
A yellow-brick Texaco station and a courts-style motel flashed neon beacons to weary motorists; some even recognize the streetscape from the opening scenes of The Grapes of Wrath.
But when Interstate 40 bypassed the town in 1975, Glenrio faded to a photogenic ghost, its vintage signs weathering silently in the desert sun. Today, the Glenrio Historic District preserves these silent storefronts, giving modern pilgrims a chance to stand with one boot in Texas, the other in New Mexico, and feel the hush of two-lane time travel.
Did you know that Glenrio, TX is a twin-city also on Route 66?
