About Foss, Oklahoma: A Ghost of the Mother Road

Foss is a small, unincorporated community located in Washita County along the historic 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66, following both Historic Route 66 and OK-66. Founded in 1900, Foss once thrived as a popular and essential refueling stop for early Mother Road travelers.

The community's centerpiece was Kobel's Place: a 1920s-era combination gas station and café that served as a vital social and service hub. For decades, it provided fuel, home-cooked meals and a friendly respite for adventurers traveling west.

However, like many small towns on the Mother Road, Foss' fortune declined rapidly after it was tragically bypassed by Interstate 40 in the 1960s. The steady stream of traffic vanished, and businesses shuttered, leading to its slow transformation into a near-ghost town.

Today, Foss stands as a poignant reminder of the highway's changing fortunes.  Traces of its once-bustling past remain, offering a silent history lesson to those who seek it out: the weathered ruins of Kobel's Place, the small, sturdy old jail and the quiet streets where the Route 66 traffic once roared.

Foss' story of decline and resilience lives on through nearby attractions like the comprehensive Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton and regional celebrations such as the Weatherford Heartland Cruise Car Show. For true enthusiasts, Foss is an essential stop, providing a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the soul of the Mother Road's forgotten past.
