About Fenton, Missouri: Quirky Americana on the Mother Road

Fenton is a town located along the Meramec River in St. Louis County, tracing its connection to the Mother Road along the northernmost fringes of the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Officially incorporated in 1948, Fenton grew quickly in the golden age of American road travel, when motels, diners and service stations thrived along the busy highway. With stops such as classic BP and Gulf service stations and the Sunset Ranch Motel welcoming motorists for decades, Fenton is firmly embedded into Route 66 lore.

The town's most enduring and whimsical landmark is the Pink Elephant, a fiberglass roadside statue that has become synonymous with Fenton's national identity. This elephant should not be confused with Bella the Elephant, which is located on Route 66 in Hazelwood, MO

The Pink Elephant was originally installed at a mini-golf and batting cage attraction. The elephant has stood for decades as a beacon of kitschy Americana. Once depicted holding a martini glass, it now proudly wraps its trunk around an American flag, greeting travelers from its perch at 2599 MO-141. Its playful character embodies the creativity and humor that made Route 66 more than just a road but rather an experience.

Fenton's story; however, goes deeper than its roadside quirks. The area was once home to the ancient Fenton Mounds, dating back to AD 1050-1400, which sadly were leveled in 2001 to make way for modern development in the form of a Walmart Supercenter. This blend of lost history and surviving icons underscores both Route 66's and the town's layered past.

Today, Fenton continues to celebrate its Route 66 heritage through its connection to the Route 66 St. Louis Festival, where classic cars, live music and retro vibes keep the Mother Road alive for a new generation. With its mix of nostalgic landmarks, playful Americana and vibrant community life, Fenton offers travelers a truly memorable stop on America's most famous highway.
