About Eureka, Missouri: A Town of Discovery on Route 66
Located in St. Louis County along the Meramec River, Eureka has been tied to travel and transportation since its earliest days. Platted in 1858 along the Missouri Pacific Railroad, its name (Greek for "I found it") reflected the delight of a railroad engineer who discovered the perfect stretch of level terrain for the tracks. That spirit of discovery would later carry into Eureka's role as a key Route 66 community.
The 1932 alignment of the highway brought motorists directly through town, and with them came the golden age of roadside Americana. Travelers encountered landmarks like the 1960s Phillips 66 gull-wing station, the Rock City Café and the Meramec River U.S. 66 Bridge: a vital crossing that linked generations of travelers. Through the bridge has been closed since 2010, its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 ensures its legacy endures as one of the most iconic Route 66 structures in Missouri.
Today Eureka continues to honor its Mother Road roots while embracing modern attractions. Six Flags St. Louis provides thrills for families while the serene Black Madonna Shrine and the Endangered Wolf Center offer spiritual and ecological experiences. Just east of town, The Mother Road at Route 66 State Park preserves the site of former Times Beach and welcomes visitors with trails, river views and the 1935 Bridgehead Inn Visitor Center, rich with Mother Road memorabilia.
Annual celebrations like the Route 66 St. Louis Festival keep the nostalgia alive, ensuring that Eureka remains a vibrant mix of history, nature and fun. For travelers seeking both adventure and heritage, Eureka truly embodies the spirit of discovery along the Main Street of America.
