About Endee, New Mexico: Gunfights and Glory on the Mother Road
Tucked against the Texas state line in eastern New Mexico, Endee began in the late 1880s as headquarters of the sprawling "ND" cattle ranch. This cattle brand was pronounced "En-Dee" by the locals. When the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad laid tracks through the high plains, a Wild West boomtown emerged to serve thirsty cowboys and cattle barons.
In its rowdy prime, Endee packed in saloons, dance halls, and gambling houses where tempers flared as fast as the bourbon poured. Route 66, America's legendary Mother Road, rumbled through town in 1926, replacing railroad steam with the growl of Model T engines.
Dusty road-trippers stopped for gas and heard tales of Saturday night shootouts spilling onto Main Street, ranch hands betting a month of their wages on single poker hands and dancehall women who could outshoot any tenderfoot. Old-timers swore you could still spot bullet holes pockmarking the saloon walls decades after the gunsmoke cleared.
When Interstate 40 bypassed Endee in the 1950s, the town's pulse slowed to a whisper. Today, crumbling adobe ruins, a weather-beaten filling station, and cattle guards clanging in the wind are all that remain. But if you stand amongst the tumbleweeds at sunset, you may hear the echoes of clinking spurs and a lonesome harmonica drifting across the wide-open New Mexico plains and perhaps the occasional gunshot.
