About Duarte, California: A Stop for the Soul on the Mother Road

Duarte, a verdant and historically rich city, holds a distinctive identity as "The City of Health." This fitting moniker stems from the presence of City of Hope National Medical Center, a world-renowned cancer research and treatment institution that has drawn patients, doctors, and researchers from around the globe since its founding in 1913. 

The city’s roots reach back to the Rancho Azusa de Duarte land grant of the 1840s, part of California's early rancho era. Originally an agricultural community known for citrus groves and vineyards, Duarte evolved significantly with the arrival of U.S. Route 66 along Huntington Drive. 

By the 1930s through the 1950s, it became a convenient and inviting stop for travelers on the Mother Road, offering classic roadside services such as motels, diners, and gas stations amid a scenic foothill backdrop. 

Although the construction of Interstate 210 in the 1970s shifted major traffic away from the original Route 66 alignment, Duarte has preserved much of its small-town charm and historic appeal.

Its Huntington Drive corridor still features traces of mid-century Route 66 architecture and signage. Today, Duarte’s enduring legacy as The City of Health reflects not only its medical excellence but also its resilience and ability to blend progress with preservation.
