About Divernon, Illinois: A Community Built on Pride and Heritage
Divernon, Illinois is a charming Sangamon County town located located along the 1926-1977 alignment on Route 66. Settled in 1853 and later incorporated in 1887, Divernon first thrived as a railroad hub along the Illinois Central Railroad, long before Route 66 brought a new wave of travelers through its streets.
One of the town's most memorable landmarks was the Divernon Depot, which once stood proudly on Route 66 until its demolition in 1979. Though the depot is gone, Divernon's sense of history remains strong. The Divernon Township Library, established in 1922 at 221 S. Second St., continues to serve as a cornerstone of local heritage and community life.
Divernon is also known for its vibrant celebrations. Since 1935, the Divernon Homecoming Festival had been a cherished tradition each June, bringing parades, games and fellowship to the heart of the village. The town also welcomes travelers during the annual Red Carpet Corridor festivities in May, ensuring its character shines for Route 66 enthusiasts.
