About Davenport, Oklahoma: Preserving the Mother Road, Brick by Brick

Davenport lies along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Lincoln County. Founded in 1902, the town became a popular stop for travelers after the highway's official designation in 1926.

Its most distinctive feature, and its main claim to fame, is the brick-paved section of Route 66 that runs directly through the heart of town. Laid in the 1920s, this meticulously maintained stretch is one of the few surviving brick segments in all of Oklahoma. It is officially listed as a historic landmark and serves as a tangible, unforgettable reminder of the earliest days of automobile travel on the Mother Road.

In its heyday, Davenport welcomed motorists with service stations, cafés, and roadside businesses, many of which have since faded. Today, its small downtown retains a charming, vintage appeal, enhanced by colorful murals that vividly depict the town's history and Route 66 heritage.

Located just a short drive from the Route 66 Interpretive Center in Chandler, Davenport benefits from its proximity to other historic stops. Local participation in annual events, including the the Stroud Summer Festival (supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association), helps ensure that Davenport's brick-paved legacy continues to draw travelers eager to experience a genuine piece of authentic Mother Road history.
