About Danby, California: Where Ghost Town History Cuts Deep
Deep in the Mojave Desert, lies the captivating ghost town of Danby. Its sparse ruins starkly recall the interconnected history of the railroad and Route 66. Founded in the early 1900s, Danby’s original purpose was economic: it served as an essential stop on the Santa Fe Railway and operated a crucial mineral processing plant that gathered materials from the surrounding desert mines.
When the Mother Road was commissioned in 1926, Danby's role transitioned, adapting to serve the increasing flow of transcontinental travelers. During its mid-century Route 66 heyday, Danby was an essential and welcoming desert oasis, offering weary motorists a much-needed gas station and small store between more established towns. The town's eventual abandonment followed the construction of Interstate 40 in 1973, which bypassed this section of the old highway.
